County Championship – Odds

Division One

Warwickshire – 4/1
Nottinghamshire – 11/2
Somerset – 6/1
Middlesex – 7/1
Surrey -7/1
Sussex – 9/1
Durham – 9/1
Yorkshire – 10/1
Derbyshire – 28/1

Although Warwickshire start favourites after last season, I don’t see value at 4/1. I just can’t see them having the same run of consistency as last time around with Carter and Johnson moving on. Instead I quite like the look of Gus Fraser’s Middlesex at 7/1. It does depend a lot on the Australians not calling up Chris Rogers or Adam Voges if they panic during the Ashes, but the signing of James Harris looks a good one. The Graeme Smith Surrey experiment with a mid-season cameo from Ricky Ponting will be interesting but they’re not the juggernaut of the early 2000s just yet. They will be dangerous if Chris Tremlett plays enough matches. I also wouldn’t dismiss Derbyshire as the worth a fiver long shot. A winning habit, no players likely to miss chunks of the season due to England duty, plus the signings of Shiv Chanderpaul and Richard Johnson certainly doesn’t make that 28/1 look too shabby. It depends how quickly they adapt to the step up.

Division Two

Lancashire – 3/1
Hampshire – 4/1
Kent – 5/1
Essex – 7/1
Worcestershire – 9/1
Glamorgan – 20/1
Northamptonshire – 20/1
Leicestershire – 31/1
Gloucestershire – 33/1

I like Hampshire and think after last year’s short format successes they might have one eye on 4 day promotion this time around. If it’s a dry summer, Saeed Ajmal could give them some serious mid-season impetus but I’m not sure where the runs come from past James Adams. I think they’ll be worth a punt but you might get better odds if they’re not setting the table on fire after the first month or so of the championship. Otherwise, the favourites Lancashire are favourites for a reason (Katich and Prince two good signings), and Essex look quite handy assuming Bopara has now officially missed the International boat and is available for the entire season. Don’t waste your coppers on the bottom two.

I think Warwickshire will walk it, woakes, Clarke and wright won’t play much for England but will feel they’re a a couple of good performances away from an Ashes test. 4/1 looks value to me, we’ll see. Nice piece though

    • I just think that with Giles taking a job with the ECB they won’t have the same structure which saw them get so much success, plus Woakes and Clarke will be around the England ODI set up at least I’d have thought. Plus there’s a little stat that ever since the formation of the two league system more champions have then been relegated (3) the following season than matched their achievements (2).
